Yamaha is all set to make a bold move in India’s electric two-wheeler market with an all-new Yamaha electric scooter. Recently, spy images from Bengaluru have surfaced online, showcasing a camouflaged electric scooter undergoing tests. Codenamed RY01, this upcoming model is expected to be based on the River Indie’s proven chassis and powertrain platform but will feature Yamaha’s distinct design and engineering DNA.

A Unique Twist on the River Indie Platform

In 2023, Yamaha invested a whopping USD 40 million (over ₹341 crore) into Bengaluru-based EV start-up River. Unlike other strategic collaborations such as Hero-Ather or TVS-Ultraviolette, Yamaha isn’t just a stakeholder — they are crafting an entirely new product using River’s electric platform. The new Yamaha electric scooter will be manufactured at River’s state-of-the-art facility in Bengaluru, ensuring high-quality local production.

Spy Shots Reveal New Design Language

Though the scooter is heavily camouflaged, the spy images reveal quite a bit. While it shares some similarities with the River Indie — like the swingarm design, 14-inch alloy wheels, and 6-inch colour LCD display — Yamaha has given this scooter a substantial visual overhaul.

One of the major design changes is the tail-lamp positioning, which is mounted higher than the Indie’s. The side panels have been redesigned to give it a less bulky, more refined look. These changes not only enhance the scooter’s aesthetics but also expose more of the rear wheel and suspension, giving it a sportier stance.

The front apron has been completely reworked too. It wraps differently around the scooter’s sides and houses a new vertically stacked LED headlamp. Although similar in placement to the River Indie’s headlight, this new unit appears slimmer and sharper with a narrower gap between the LEDs — a distinct Yamaha signature.

Interestingly, the test mule seems to omit the rectangular luggage bars under the seat that are a part of River Indie’s “SUV of scooters” theme. However, the crash protection bars on the front apron remain intact, likely for added safety and utility.

A Shift in Positioning – From SUV to Maxi-Scooter?

While the River Indie has been promoted as the “SUV of electric scooters,” Yamaha could position its version more as a traditional maxi-scooter — a segment that resonates well with urban commuters seeking a blend of comfort, style, and practicality. The Yamaha electric scooter is expected to be large and roomy, offering ample leg space and storage.

For reference, the River Indie tips the scale at 143 kg and boasts a massive 43-litre underseat boot — the largest in India’s EV category. If Yamaha retains similar dimensions and space, it could be a major USP for urban riders and college-goers alike.

Performance and Specifications

While the final specifications are yet to be officially revealed, we expect the Yamaha electric scooter to retain the core performance components of the River Indie. That means a robust 6.7kW (peak) mid-mounted motor paired with a 4kWh NMC battery. The claimed top speed is around 90 km/h, and real-world range in Eco mode is expected to touch 100 km — ideal for daily commutes and short trips.

Given Yamaha’s global experience in tuning and refinement, the ride quality and performance could be even more refined compared to the Indie.

Expected Price and Launch Timeline

The River Indie is currently priced at ₹1.44 lakh (ex-showroom). While Yamaha may borrow the platform, its version is likely to carry a slightly premium price tag due to added features, brand value, and network support. Expect the Yamaha electric scooter to launch at a price point close to ₹1.50 lakh to ₹1.60 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a high-value offering in the mid-range electric scooter segment.

The official launch is expected later this year, possibly around the festive season when most two-wheeler companies unveil their major products. Yamaha will retail this new electric scooter via its own dealership network, which ensures wider availability and better after-sales service.

What’s Next for Yamaha Electric Scooters?

While the upcoming scooter is based on River Indie, Yamaha is also developing its own global EV platform. Slated for launch around 2026–2027, this future Yamaha electric scooter will be designed entirely in-house with inputs from key international markets, including India. This shows Yamaha’s long-term commitment to electric mobility and innovation.

Final Thoughts

With the Yamaha electric scooter based on the River Indie ready to hit Indian roads soon, the electric scooter space is bound to get even more competitive. Whether you’re an urban commuter, tech enthusiast, or someone exploring EV options for the first time, Yamaha’s entry brings a promising new blend of performance, style, and practicality.

Stay tuned as Yamaha gears up to redefine electric mobility in India with a truly exciting offering!
